I am configuring a site for my father who is disabled and trying to market some of his artwork online to help him become more financially independant. I have the canned CPanel install running and can access the admin page without problems. Of course I had to add a catalog directory after the install and put a php.ini file in with register global flags= on; just to get this far.

Im probably going to need to lockdown the site next and then apply a template (or make my own) then add a certificate for securing the shopping experience. I think I have this right ? Any tips greatly appreciated...Are there any OSCommmerce Admins out there willing to help?

I think you've got it about right, although the register_globals dependency was removed from the latest version of osCommerce. Are you using the latest version?

See the tips and tricks section of this forum for lots of tips for newcomers, including lots of guides for enabling SSL.

I say not to you, "backup your files before you change them." I say, rather, "use Subversion, and never worry about ruining your files again."

I am using 2.2 MS2 (060817) with buySAFE , I thought that was the latest? Its strange though. Until I added the register gloab flags under 2 directories in 2 files i named php.ini I got a server errorstating register globals was not enabled and couldnt access the admin page or any other for that matter (except error pages)? I do recall a log on prompt immediately after instal though. However it wouldnt authenticate at all...

060817 is out of date. The latest is RC1.

Personally, I'm putting off upgrading. I'm in the home stretch before launching my site, having spent many months doing extensive customizations, and the prospect of merging the updates into my changes is daunting me.

So, I guess the point is, the upgrade isn't automatic; there's a decision to be made there.

If you have spent a lot of time, continue with what you are doing. If you are basically starting out, download the latest.

Well just to get some expertise in the installation area of oscommerce. Itried to install the newer version. downloaded directly and tried to install locally. Then I realized I was working with windows locally.. Not to spinoff this original topic just an FYI (PHP for windows is still experimental right?) I think there is a module so you can use IIS but I have had an awfully torturous time the last 2 days while trying to get it working! Guess I cant bring this in house for now until I stand alone an apache server runnning on my ubuntu I use for fun computer...

Back to my original store load, an already online previous version and locking it down. ... any tips or links appreciated

Crikey, download XAMP or WAMP and it will work like on the web.
