undefined function

I'm getting the following error when bringing up the admin:

 

 

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_pconnect()

in /var/www/html/admin/includes/functions/database.php

on line 17

 

 

I'm not sure what's causing this?

 

`mysqlshow catalog` shows the catalog entries. Let me know what specific information would be helpful, if any.
