Where I am, you need a merchant account with a bank unless you rely on a third party to process them (such as paypal). If you are going to use a third party, you need to install a payment module for them. Some are in the contributions area, others you may get when you set up an account with them. Why not start by using one of the paypal ipn modules (you will need a merchant account with paypal for any of the paypal options).

So as i understand it you need a merchant account to process credit cards etc from a bank and have the money directly transferred to that bank account. and they will prob provide you with, or you can download a contribution to process that particular merchant account? I was under the impression that paypal does this too (also a merchant), but as far as i can tell it doesnt accept debit cards/laser cards. than means i would be able to accept credit card payments with paypal, but would need some other account for debit card payments. Honestly that's an option, but not one i would like to take as it's a bit messy (for the client). any suggestions?

Yes or you use a third party to do it for you. I do not know what options you have in Ireland. There are others (in Australia, we have PayMate - only available for Australian merchants), quake is another, worldpay, and many others. any suggestions? I use about 5 payment options, the merchant account with my bank, paypal, paymate, direct deposit into my account, mail in check/money order, telephone payment, cash for local delivery and pickup options. What you use is up to you.
