I messed up my includes/languages/english.php file!

Newbie here, and I have a down website that I need up asap! Not sure what I did wrong, but somehow I messed up my includes/languages/english.php file, and when I go to my website, I am getting this message:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/mysti43/public_html/includes/languages/english.php on line 158

I have gone through the code (what little I know about what might be wrong) and can't seem to find the problem. I've tried to do a "restore database", but that didn't do anything. Is there any other way to restore the file?

Sure would appreciate any help!!!!

Copy/paste the contents of /includes/languages/english.php into your next post, and I'm sure someone will be able to see what's amok.

just restore your backup file, you made one right?? If not redownload osC and put the file in question back

the backup utility in osC only backs up the DB, not your files

Just an FYI, if you do this:

If not redownload osC and put the file in question back

You'll lose all custom modifications you've made.

It will probably work (i.e. not give any errors), but it may not be what you really want.

I was afraid you'd say that. :-) The problem is that I bought the site from a third party who did some customizing. I've tried to email him for help, but no answer. I wouldn't even know how to fix this! Hopefully, I'll hear back from him. I'm wondering what I would need to get from him so that if this happens again, I can install the original files. Or can I just go to the OSC site and get it from there?

Also, I'm wondering how to edit my site without doing it in the OSC file manager? Would I use the coffecup ftp? Can you walk me through the steps I would need to take to make changes and then to save the entire site? Would sure appreciate it!!!

The only FTP program I've ever used it WS_FTP LE.

And it's not even available anymore to download, that I'm aware of.

I copied and pasted that file, and this is the new error message:

You should use your site's control panel to edit files on your web site. Or download it to your PC and use a text editor (such as Notepad, NOT Mircosoft Word!) to make changes and upload the edited version.

It always best to make a backup copy of any file before editing.

If you use Notepad, you need to turn Wordwrap OFF.

At the top of Notepad, click on Format and be sure no checkmark appears in front of Wordwrap.

If there is a checkmark there, click on Wordwrap to turn it off.

Okay, I'm sure these are really dumb questions, but...you say I should use my site's control panel, that is cpanel, right? When I go there, where would I edit the file?

Yes.

First, turn Wordwrap OFF in Notepad.

Copy/paste what I posted into Notepad and save as english.php (a text file, yes).

The upload is part of your site's control panel, too. You'll have to find it.

I'm sorry this is a little complicated.
