exclude categories from search engine results

how can categories be excluded from being picked up for search engine results?

e.g. Google currently list most of my pages like this:

A Computer Store - Cheap PCs for U

DVDs (16) CDs (14) Keyboards (21) Monitors (27) Components (45) Accessories (3) Spare Parts (24) ...

www.storename.co.uk/index.php - 31k - Cached - Similar pages

Whereas that middle line should be the text from the content of each page

If you search for specific terms, google will come up with that part of text that contains the search words. If you're looking for a domain the first few words are displayed. And those are the words in your categoris box, since the header consists most times of grapics..

thats exactly the problem - is there any way of stopping google from thinking the categories box is the start of the page? maybe putting it in a table or disguising it as a graphic?

what does everyone else do to combat this?

no way. Because it is the start of the page. But you can put it to the right side, so it's not the start of the page. Also it is already a table. You can make it base on grafics, sure, if you know how.

thanks for the suggestion but i assume all boxes would need to be moved to the right column in order to have the desired effect otherwise the search result would start with Manufacturers/Search Box/Information etc.

have u worked around it on your site?
