To track customer accounts...or not???

I'm seriously considering NOT tracking customers accounts and removing all the appropriate links. My main reasoning is that I know it is a turn off for a lot of people to have to set up an account just to buy something. My wife (for example) gets all bent out of shape when sites require such measures.

Before I do circumvent using user accounts however, I'd like to get some feedback from all of you.

(1) What are the benefits gained in requiring and collecting customer accounts?

(2) How much negative feedback have you received as a result of using customer accounts?

(3) Is there an easy way (within the ADMIN) to toggle customer accounts on and off?

Thanks guys! :D

Well, most of the information that is provided is going ot have to be provided anyways.

My store for instance, only requires an email, name, address, password, and a selection from a dropdown for where you were referred.

So really, that's only a password and a dropdown selection more than they would have had to bive to make a purchase anyway.

NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit.

If you have a question about any of my posts here, your best bet is to contact me though either Email or PM in my profile, and I'll be happy to help.

I'm with WandW. Wouldn't it be simpler to just "pretty up" the login procedure ?

Eg, instead of calling it "create_account.php", call it "delivery_details.php" or somesuch...

It's not easy to take away all of the login details as there are multiple changes needed - I managed to do it on one clients site but it was a nightmare to be honest, and he has lost a lot of functionality within Admin...(reports, orders, customers listing, email, newsletters) all this stuff would need re-coding or removing...

I agree, change the name of the process and THEN make it desirable to sign up....a couple of things I am doing is to only allow access to the products_new.php when logged in. I am calling the process joining the Members Only Club and they will get some special coupons through the year etc.

It's not like having to sign up before you can even browse...those are the places I never go back to.

Thanks for the insight guys. I will just work very hard at making it a seamless transition from viewing the shopping cart to actually entering payment info. I think I agree with you that with a bit of creativity and imagination I can make it seem not so intrusive.

Now just to convince my wife. :D

BY THE WAY! Each of you have fantastic sites! I've enjoyed browsing through each of them. You're all very talented.
