osCommerce and SSL

Having just finished a debacle where I wasted many hours trying to get several "free" shopping carts my host offered to work, only to find out that they just plain wouldn't work on that server, I am pretty gunshy.

I'd like to give osCommerce a try. Only thing is, I can't figure out whether it will take orders securely with my server.

I have a cheap hosting account that lets me used a shared SSL server. When I was trying to get the last shopping cart to work (the mysterious That'sAnOrder, and while it worked great non-secure, it wouldn't work secure at all. My hosts support told me the problem was the secure and non-secure stuff had to be on the same server, so they were going to "move my whole sit over to a secure server, where the more expensive accounts were". This didn't make any difference and they concluded that TAO just wouldn't work on their servers, period.

Anyway, my question is, anyway to tell in advance whether osC likely to work on that sort of setup any better? I know I should probably just switch to a host that already has osC but I prepaid my current one for a long time back before they went to hell.

Excuse me for going on at such length, but I don't really understand the whole SSL thing so its hard for me to condense.
