Changing Favourites Icon

Recommended Posts

Hi,

You have to create an image in the format .ico (name as favicon.ico) and keep it at root folder.

Next in index page define a link in HEAD

Add the following HTML tag to your web page after the <head> tag, before the </head> tag:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" >

Check out free resources to generate it online using google - or try it out on http://www.html-kit.com/favicon/

Cheers,

Gaurav

Best Regards,
Gaurav

Yeah exactly!

If you went to yahoo.com.au, the little icon next to the title changes to the 'Y'.

THAT'S what I want to change!

Here you go! :thumbsup:

Hey Gents,

Thanks so much for all the tips :)

BUT, its still not working for me :(

I've gone into the index.php file and added the code as requested, and put the .ico file in basically every directory!

But its still not showing up :(

Any other ideas?

.ico file should be at same location where you have index.php and link should come up in HEAD tag.

Give me the link to your site so that I can verify if it is declared properly.

Thanks

Gaurav

I can't get mine to show up either... :blush:

I uploaded the favicon.ico to both the root and catalog folder.

I can see favicon on IE and Firefox for http://handeshobbies.com but not in http://handeshobbies.com/catalog/

Maybe you should clear your cache and try again.

The easiest way to check is

a. Check the link directly http://handeshobbies.com/favicon.ico if this shows up in your browser,

b. Check if you have inserted the tag properly in HEAD.

<head>

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=<?php echo CHARSET; ?>">

<title><?php echo TITLE; ?></title>

<base href="<?php echo (($request_type == 'SSL') ? HTTPS_SERVER : HTTP_SERVER) . DIR_WS_CATALOG; ?>">

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="stylesheet.css">

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" >

</head>

Thats a direct copy from my index.php file.

That is EXACTLY what is in my 'Head' tags.

The favicon.ico file is 100% in the same folder as index.php

Can you notice anything wrong?

Try this

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

If you give link to your site though - it would speed up the process !!!! Also review suggestions in previous post.

Gaurav

Hello again!

Sorry my site is not live atm, so I cant give you a direct link :(

I tried clearing the cache and restarting my browser AND using the code that you gave me BOTH to no avail :(

The problem im having, is that i've installed xampp and the xampp icon is appearing. Ive renamed all instances of the icon file to something else and replaced them with my own favicon.ico files, but the xampp icon is still appearing :S

Not sure if that makes a difference... if there is anything else you can suggest it would be appreciated :)

Hmmmm,

So is this on your local server?

What you need to do is, launch your homepage and do a view source - what do you see in tag for favicon? I am not sure if your server xampp is pushing its own (like tomcat does) icon - so in all probability you would have to look at server documentation to make suitable changes.

Else if you are just testing it on xampp and later plan to upload it to webserver - i would suggest not to bother about this for now, it would be OK on your host.

Gaurav

Hey again!!!!

Here is a direct quote from the homepage when i did a view source...

<head>

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

<title>IT Elements</title>

<base href="http://localhost/ite/catalog/">

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="stylesheet.css">

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

</head>

Im currently using Apache as my web server (installed through xampp)

Simple test

what do you get when you do a http://localhost/catalog/favicon.ico ? If you get your icon - it would show up to everyone, if you don't see your icon - go through apache docs to see where do they store their icon - or

try to give complete URL (i hvn't tried this .. so not sure if it is right or wrong)

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://localhost/catalog/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" /> [change as per your site]

I guess... to take this further - I am not too keen to review apache docs though, as i said, it would be a local server problem and if you are going to host your site remotely on a different server, you may ignore this for the time being.

Gaurav

Thank you for the help, I appreciate it.

Gee, I can now see it just the opposite - I can see it with IE at http://handeshobbies.com/catalog/ but not http://handeshobbies.com

In order to make it work I had to change the code from this -

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://handeshobbies.com/catalog/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

To this -

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://handeshobbies.com/catalog/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">

I know, it doesn't make much sence to me... :blink:

Even though I deleted my temperary internet files I still can't see it at http://handeshobbies.com ~ strange!

The suggestion to write the full path name to the icon worked a treat :)

Your a genius!

When I click on any link however the icon disappears and reverts back to the normal IE one... but i think i'll stop here.

Getting the homepage to change icons has made me happy enough :)

Thanks again for all the help! :)

For anyone reading this thread in future I thought I state a few important points;

The way favicon.ico works depends very much on your host. Most of the time NO alteration to the index.php or any other file is required. Just copy the .ico file into the root of your website, in such a way that if you goto www.yourdomain.com/favicon.ico it brings up your icon. Visitors should then see the icon in their browser, and when they add it as a favourite.

IMPORTANT. If you use the above method the change WILL NOT take immediate effect. It depends on 1. You hosts cache and 2. Your browser cache. You should clear your browser cache and allow a couple of hours for it to start working.

If the very few occasions where above does not work, you will be required to add the following lines to your php files, somwhere between the header tags.

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" >

Another topic which has not been covered is that with the latest browsers animated icons is supported. This online tool will easily convert your gif to an ico, and will even create a scrolling animated version;

http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/

IF you want to use animated favicon the following TWO lines are required;

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" >

<link rel="icon" href="animated_favicon1.gif" type="image/gif" >

Personally I have uploaded the animated version to my site, and referenced it within the index.php, for any other area of my site it just uses the unanimated version, as I dont want to have to edit 40+ php files.

Hi,

I don't get it. I did everything to get the.ico to work proparly, but it still does not show up in IE.

Could someone please help?

I copied the herbalife.ico file to my root and in index.php, before the closing </head> tag I put the code <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/herbalife.ico" />

I also tried several options without the / and renaming the file and the code to favicon.ico, but it just does not seem to work.

Strangest thing is that is DOES work in Firefox and in Opera, but NOT in Explorer.

If someone could check my website, www.shapeshop.nl for me, it would be highly appeciated.

thank you.
