Need feedback on first oscommerce project Toy Store

Hi guys this is my first oscommerce store. I have thrown in many mods and such and designed a template for it. I am looking for overall feedback on the look/feel of the store as well as its functionality.

Yes, its a toy store, oriented towards children and the parents of children and also the odd collector. So I was going for a warm color scheme that is kinda fun but also professional looking.

Please note I currently have the SSL turned off as I am in the process of buying a new certificate as my old shared one worked perfect in Firefox but produced warnings in internet explorer.

Thanks in advance for your advice, these forums are a great tool for a newbie like me.

cheers,

Gray

hmmm nothing yet... Please anyone who has a spare moment I would appreciate some feedback.

I am getting a couple sales a week from customers who are desperate for hard-to-find items, however I want to increase my casual-shopper turnout. Please criticize my store and point out purchasing bottlenecks.

Thanks again,

Gray

i like it, looks nice and you have loads of products. You dont have SSL set up , as i cannot see it in sign up.

Looks like you have spent some time and done it well.

some one else will comment on the rest and advise you what you may want to add to improve it.

Good luck!

Looks good on the surface. Lots of front page content which might be a hassle for dialup users.

Design looks great.

I agree with none_uk. Your header says SSL but there is nothing there on the signup.

Interesting how you removed the email form in the contact us. Actually... your contact us page is not in your shop. Wow that was a good merge with your existing website.

Looks good though.

Not bad for a first attempt.

You have some problems like:

Big gaps at top of 'create_account.php'

2 / in url - store//catalog/ - check the config files

as mentioned, no ssl, that would put me right off buying

What's the difference between store/osc and retail? Minor thing but for a snob like me it's an irritant

Confusing navigation 'home' in the breadcrumb goes to somewhere different to clicking the header

Which brings me on to ...

TJ > That's not clever, it's actually a mistake. Contact in the left bar and contact at the top are 2 different links.

And ...

You have 'Tax & Shipping & Returns' in the side bar, 'Shipping/Tax & Returns' as the page header and 'Shipping/Tax Info' as the first sub header - which is it?

That'll do for now.

move the store from: store/catalog to store... it is better for search engines!

I love oscommerce and OS software! I'm not a programmer, I'm only a learning boy and a translator :) I love full contribution packages!

Hey guys, thanks for all the feedback, I have been working hard for a couple months and am now ready to put this site back up for review.

I think I have fixed all the previous issues, I have moved the store to the root directory, merged the rest of the site into oscommerce and I got the SSL going nicely. I also added a blog and a wicked cool popup-image script for the product descriptions page.

Please let me know what you think!

cheers and thanks everyone for the input,

Okay:

1. You built the store using the Simple Template System and there are known issues with getting good search engine ratings using that system.

2. No SEO URLs. You should fix that.

3. You went crazy with Meta Tags - so much so that most search engines would mark your site down badly for "keyword spamming". Don't repeat any word more than three times - or else!

4. You are using an html meta refresh to redirect people to the root - use a 301 Permanent .htaccess rule instead. Meta http refresh redirects also aren't liked by search engines.

Why is that? As long as you use the dynamic meta tag fix for STS, SEO url's and a sitemap there wouldnt be any more issues with search engines than using a typical stock install.

I felt a little cluttered in there myself, theres just a lot going on with it, but I thought the color scheme was nice and I really liked being able to zoom in on the toys to get a close detailed picture of them

To fix up my meta tags I am gona need a contrib that can change them dynamically, and also be compatible with STS.

I'm looking at this one right now:

Any suggestions or recomendations?

Cheers,

I use Header Tags Controller. You can get that here: Header Tags Controller.

I do use it with STS. To make them work, you can use STS Power Pack. You can get that here: STS Power Pack.

Hope that helps!

Now can I just ask what is new about this ?

You have been online almost a year

381529 requests since Wednesday 16 May, 2007

Just because the site isn't new doesn't mean it is unworthy of comments, feedback, and improvement.

What is the point of this post?
