In includes/column_left.php find this:

  if ((USE_CACHE == 'true') && empty($SID)) {
echo tep_cache_manufacturers_box();
 } else {
include(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'manufacturers.php');
 }

and comment it out like this:

/*
 if ((USE_CACHE == 'true') && empty($SID)) {
echo tep_cache_manufacturers_box();
 } else {
include(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'manufacturers.php');
 }
*/

I would comment rather than delete altogether, incase you change your mind in the future.

I just comment out one line, which works!

 if ((USE_CACHE == 'true') && empty($SID)) {
echo tep_cache_manufacturers_box();
 } else {
  // include(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'manufacturers.php');
 }

You should do the same thing in advanced search.

You comment code so the PHP parser ignores it. You can comment single lines by using 2 forward slashes // or you can comment blocks of code with a forward slash and asterisk /* */

Most developers use these methods for notes, to remember what the code is doing at any given point. Or so another developer knows what the code is doing.

// Single line commented is ignored

/*
This is a block of code
commented so the PHP parser
doesn't read any of it.
*/

If the manufacturers are still show after commenting that code in includes/column_left.php, then you have some custom coding calling for them. It looks as if you are using a template so this is very likely.

If still an issue then set cache to false.
