pconnect - slowing down the server

Hi,

 

I have USE_PCONNECT set to "false" in both admin and catalog

 

When I take a look at MySQL, it has severa,l processes running at any one minute that have been open for 5 to 20 minutes.

 

I know that these connects are coming from osCommerce (I launched about an hour ago, and up until then I never had any connections lasting more than a second or two). Any ideas as to why (and how I can get back to connect)?
