To index.html or not to index.html?

Quick question. I'm trying to decide whether I want to use an index.html page and would like some feedback from some veterans. I'm current routing all my traffic directly to my catalog/default.php page. I'm considering instead to use an index.html page. I see a couple of advantages and a couple of disadvantages. Advantages: Better search engine placement?, ability to craft a description of my producst prior to choosing a category, etc. Disadvantages: requires an extra click to get to site, and well that's all. Any opinions?

I think if you offer more than the store then an index page is good. Otherwise, why bother?
