Directory Listing Denied

Hi there,

I have sucessfully installed oscommerce onto my domain.

I can access the admin area with no problems.

If I type domain.co.uk/catalog into the browser then I see the shop with no problem.

If I type domain.co.uk then I see the message

Directory Listing Denied

This virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed.

I know that it is because I have no file at all in the root directory but I am not sure what to put there ?

Anyone help ?

If you have nothing in your root then the best thing to put there would be your store. You can move all the files to the main directory and then take out all instances of "catalog" in your 2 configure.php files located in your includes folders (catalog and admin).

I thought that you HAD to put the files in the /catalog directory (at least that what the installation told me).

What is the reason for doing it that way ?

Surely if you follow the manual then everyone will have installed to /catalog and therefore encountered the same problem ?

I can't remember exactly what the install process says but the root is the best as then people don't have to type in catalog and you won't need a splash page before they get to your site. It is also better for search engines to have it in the root.

There was an update the other day http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=268335. If you just used the version from your control panel then it might be a good idea to delete your store and start over with a fresh install in the root .... IMO.

This one you will need to FTP the new files to your site. There are lots of free FTP programs (google) and using the latest version will also save you from updating the version you currently have. Once the files are loaded onto your server then you can install it just the same way as before leaving out catalog.

If you are new to osCommerce and PHP you might also want to look at a program such as EasyPHP or XAMMP which will create a server on your desktop. Then when you make a mistake you can very easily just copy over the file (drag and drop) and carry on. I found this much faster when first starting with osC and finding my way around. Just make sure you get a version that closely has the same PHP and MYSQL versions as your hosting company.

The reason the instructions tell you to (actually, suggest you to) install oscommerce in a folder called /catalog is so that people don't go overwriting their existing website by placing the store in their root directory. If you want the oscommerce store to be youre entire website, then you install it in the root.
