How can I use the count_contents function outside the catalog directory?

Hi everybody.

 

I have been searching through this forum for hours, and cannot find a universal answer to the question of how can I use the count_contents function outside the catalog directory?

 

All i'm looking to do it is display a simple "cart has xx items" on my main index page (or anything existing outside the catalog directory).

 

I would assume i could set a session variable in oscommerce, but i'm amazed that there isn't a simple solution to this question.

Is there anything that can be used without having to get all the STS template files?

 

I can't believe this doesn't come up often. Am I missing something?
