pamelasplayroom
hi all. i am part way through building a shop and i have been notified by fantastico deluxe that i need to upgrade from 2.2 MS2 (060817) to 2.2 MS2 (060817) + buySAFE. when i go into fantastico in cpanelx, it says to click the link to upgrade only if the install has not been changed with mods. the problem is that i have changed the install by adding mods, changing the css & graphics, and added the paypal webpayments pro module. i dont want to have to do all this work again, so is there a manual upgrade path that i can take, or is it safe to use fantastico to do the upgrade. also, what is the buysafe module/update, and is it a osc upgrade or something that fantastico thinks that i need, as i dont seem to be able to find any info on it on here, but im probably not looking in the right areas. i have looked at the buysafe site and i dont know if it would be any good for me as i am in the uk, and it only seems to cover the usa. many thanks. The upgrade is not really an upgrade but a completely NEW installation which WIPES OUT your previous settings. If you are concerned about having the most up to date version of osC, then you could always download today's version and use a file comparison tool such as Beyond Compare to scan your files and folders for any differences and then have the option to "merge" the changes over to your files. Beyond Compare also has a feature that will always back up your original file first so that you can "return to GO" if you know what I mean. You could also compare your files with the following contribution that was created for a simple upgrade path to the latest version of osC: http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contri...h,osc+2.2+patch Hope this helped, Bill Kellum Sounds Good Productions STS Tutorials & more: STSv4.6, STS Add-ons (STS Power Pack), STS V4 Forum STS Forum FREE TEMPLATE
pamelasplayroom
Thanks bkellum. thats what i thought fantastico would do. a new install linked to the existing database. im not that worried about having the latest and greatest osc release as long as the latest release dosent fix security issues. from what i can see, this is a extra 3rd party add on, and the basic release of osc remains the same. thanks for the info on the upgrade tools, thats going to save me a lot of time in the future. many thanks. ozEworks
I am getting that email too from Fantasico but strangely enough the domain it is emailing is not on my server. It's DNS is just pointed to my server and does not even have an account. So I am not 100% sure what is generating these emails to people. Also I don't understand the whole buySAFE thing. I know buySAFE now has an osCommerce module. But it is an add on NOT part of osCOmmerce isn't it? Yet I saw this post when trying to track down the fantasico thing: http://netenberg.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=27570 which says More about the osCommerce buySAFE module: The buySAFE module is included in the current version of osCommerce and will also be included in the future versions of osCommerce. While buySAFE is free for online merchants to use, it will provide them with an explicit third-party endorsement of merchant reliability and trustworthiness, backed by a bond guarantee. buySAFE has been proven to increase buyer confidence by providing Certified Merchants with the buySAFE Seal for display on their website and by enabling shoppers to guarantee their purchase with a bond. "Included in future versions"? Since when is osCommerce joining forces with a commercial enterprise like this?
bkellum
"Included in future versions"? Since when is osCommerce joining forces with a commercial enterprise like this? Keep in mind that Fantastico is an Automated Script Installer for web based applications. osCommerce has nothing to do with Fantastico or the way it installs osCommerce for that matter. If you use the Fantastico installer, you will get osCommerce installed the way the Fantastico authors dictate, not neccessarily getting the latest version of osCommerce itself. You should always download osCommerce from http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/downloads to insure that you are getting the most up to date release. If you do use Fantastico to install osCommerce, I strongly suggest downloading the latest version from the osCommerce.com site as well and then use a file comparison tool such as Beyond Compare to merge any differences together. If you want to get rid of the nagging upgrade option in your Cpanel - Fantastico account, then you can remove the appropriate data on the original Fantastico install from /home/USERNAME/.fantasticodata/OS_Commerce so Fantastico no longer offers to upgrade that script. Just by removing the reference txt file for that particular osCommerce installation will remove the nagging update message in Cpanel. ozEworks
My reference to commercial enterprise was a reference to BuySAFE not Fantastico. We don't use Fantasico to install osCommerce. We don't have Fantasico on our servers. This particular domain does not even exist. It is not even intended to be an osCommerce site. Its DNS only points to one of our servers. It has no account on that server. It was once hosted on another server. But it never had a site. Simple as that. As a result, I questioned the origin of the email. Particularly given the reference to buySAFE.

Just because they are doing that does not meant that BuySafe is part of the stock osCommerce installation or even married to osC. All new users should be aware of that especially if they choose to use Fantastico as their preferred installation method. As far as the orgin of your email is concerned...who knows? It would have ended up in my Spam inbox and never given a second look. Bill Kellum Sounds Good Productions STS Tutorials & more: STSv4.6, STS Add-ons (STS Power Pack), STS V4 Forum STS Forum FREE TEMPLATE
ozEworks
I missed the whole Fantasico + BuySAFE marriage. I find that insidious. I think buySAFE is as valuable a service as HackerSafe. These services as just leeches feeding off eCommerce and customer security fears. Does nothing to increase security and nothing to increase the feeling of security - in fact quite the opposite. They have a vested interest in making the Internet be perceived as unsafe - without them of course. And merchants buy into it with the promise of increased sales. Yet there is no real proof on increased sales. If you are doing things right, sales increase anyway. So what increase is due solely to a Hacker Safe logo or an option to buy an insurance bond? No-one can ever know as it is not possible to do a proper double blind test.
Cora
 Can someone help me please? I did what this thread said not to do, downloaded the upgrade through Fantastico. I have lost my front page and I have absolutely no programming skills, this is way beyond my skill level. It said that there was a back-up that will be done. This store is a fundraiser to help pay for vet or medical bills for animals that are in rescue. I donate 100% (including costs) of the money raised from the collars and leashes to help out smal;ler rescues with their vet bills and enable them to get the animals healthy and adoptable. I would be happy just to have it restored if that was possible. Anyone willing to help me? It would be greatly appreciated. Please email me privately at [email protected] Obviously the sooner the better to get this fixed. Thank-you Cora www.carecollars.com
Guest
I am experiencing fatal errors with my checkout process. Doesn't matter which payment module I try. The error message points to line 102 in the checkout_process.php file. That's where buysafe is referenced. I've tried installing buysafe using the admin module manager. It doesn't install. Just flashes at me. I'm using the latest version of osCommerce. I am not running on a secure site (yet). Does anyone know what I need to do?
