Wallyr41
Hi again, this is my second time addressing the problems with my store, as some will remember my recest post, I used front page for six years and decided to start anew with dreamweaver, which I had problems with from the first day. Now I'm online again and need some help. I tried to validate my URL and this is what I received. What does all this mean. I checked and I do have a "Doctype" in my Html. so what now??? HELP. I will change the purple soon. Walt my site is www.flagsandkites.com Result: Failed validation, 4 errors Address: Encoding: utf-8 (detect automatically) utf-8 (Unicode, worldwide) utf-16 (Unicode, worldwide) iso-8859-1 (Western Europe) iso-8859-2 (Central Europe) iso-8859-3 (Southern Europe) iso-8859-4 (North European) iso-8859-5 (Cyrillic) iso-8859-6-i (Arabic) iso-8859-7 (Greek) iso-8859-8 (Hebrew, visual) iso-8859-8-i (Hebrew, logical) iso-8859-9 (Turkish) iso-8859-10 (Latin 6) iso-8859-11 (Latin/Thai) iso-8859-13 (Latin 7, Baltic Rim) iso-8859-14 (Latin 8, Celtic) iso-8859-15 (Latin 9) iso-8859-16 (Latin 10) us-ascii (basic English) euc-jp (Japanese, Unix) shift_jis (Japanese, Win/Mac) iso-2022-jp (Japanese, email) euc-kr (Korean) gb2312 (Chinese, simplified) gb18030 (Chinese, simplified) big5 (Chinese, traditional) tis-620 (Thai) koi8-r (Russian) koi8-u (Ukrainian) iso-ir-111 (Cyrillic KOI-8) macintosh (MacRoman) windows-1250 (Central Europe) windows-1251 (Cyrillic) windows-1252 (Western Europe) windows-1253 (Greek) windows-1254 (Turkish) windows-1255 (Hebrew) windows-1256 (Arabic) windows-1257 (Baltic Rim) Doctype: (no Doctype found) (detect automatically) XHTML 1.0 Strict XHTML 1.0 Transitional XHTML 1.0 Frameset HTML 4.01 Strict HTML 4.01 Transitional HTML 4.01 Frameset HTML 3.2 HTML 2.0 ISO/IEC 15445:2000 ("ISO HTML") XHTML 1.1 XHTML Basic 1.0 XHTML-Print 1.0 XHTML 1.1 plus MathML 2.0 XHTML 1.1 plus MathML 2.0 plus SVG 1.1 MathML 2.0 SVG 1.0 SVG 1.1 SVG 1.1 Tiny SVG 1.1 Basic SMIL 1.0 SMIL 2.0 Revalidate With Options: Show Source Show Outline Validate error pages Verbose Output Help on the options is available. No Character Encoding Found! Falling back to UTF-8. I was not able to extract a character encoding labeling from any of the valid sources for such information. Without encoding information it is impossible to reliably validate the document. I'm falling back to the "UTF-8" encoding and will attempt to perform the validation, but this is likely to fail for all non-trivial documents. Read the FAQ entry on character encoding for more details and pointers on how to fix this problem with your document. No DOCTYPE found! Attempting validation with HTML 4.01 Transitional. The DOCTYPE Declaration was not recognized or is missing. This probably means that the Formal Public Identifier contains a spelling error, or that the Declaration is not using correct syntax. Validation has been performed using a default "fallback" Document Type Definition that closely resembles "HTML 4.01 Transitional", but the document will not be Valid until you have corrected this problem with the DOCTYPE Declaration. Learn how to add a doctype to your document from our FAQ. This page is not Valid (no Doctype found)! Below are the results of attempting to parse this document with an SGML parser. Error Line 1 column 0: no document type declaration; implying "".
The checked page did not contain a document type ("DOCTYPE") declaration. The Validator has tried to validate with a fallback DTD, but this is quite likely to be incorrect and will generate a large number of incorrect error messages. It is highly recommended that you insert the proper DOCTYPE declaration in your document -- instructions for doing this are given above -- and it is necessary to have this declaration before the page can be declared to be valid. ✉ Error Line 3 column 79: character data is not allowed here. ...AqHvDB1eK/vW3dn/p7ERHf6QSOW4DbcjwM=" /> You have used character data somewhere it is not permitted to appear. Mistakes that can cause this error include putting text directly in the body of the document without wrapping it in a container element (such as a
aragraph
) or forgetting to quote an attribute value (where characters such as "%" and "/" are common, but cannot appear without surrounding quotes). ✉ Error Line 6 column 6: end tag for "HEAD" which is not finished.
Most likely, You nested tags and closed them in the wrong order. For example
...
is not acceptable, as must be closed before
. Acceptable nesting is:
...
Another possibility is that you used an element which requires a child element that you did not include. Hence the parent element is "not finished", not complete. For instance,
generally requires a
, lists (ul, ol, dl) require list items (li, or dt, dd), and so on. ✉ Error Line 7 column 6: end tag for "HTML" which is not finished.
Andrew Yuen
Consider looking into the following contribution: http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,2693 I would remove the (->) in your category infobox. Also, Is there a reason why your site is fluid but the index content is fixed width and aligned left? Other then that I noticed category images are broken as well as some product images, consider fixing. Also your title for every page is 1, consider changing to something more descriptive. Wallyr41
Thanks Andrew Yuen I looked into the contribution and it gave the instructions for only a new install, so no help there. How do I remove the -> in the catagory inforbox? I don't know why my site is fluid but the index content is fixed width and aligned left? . Please explain this as I am new to oscommerce and the FTP program. I can see the
1< Title> in the view source but can't find it in the admin section. More descriptive would be the Title of my site. (Flags and Kites). Just piont me in the right direction and I can try to fix the problem, which contribs and so on. Thank you for the help and as you can see I need much more. Walt
