Error: "client Does Not Support Authentication Protocol Requested By Server; Consider Upgrading Mysql Client"

So right in the first step of installation I get this:

 

Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

 

The site is hosted (shared) by godaddy.

 

Info from phpmyadmin:

 

Server version: 4.1.22-max-log

MySQL client version: 5.0.27

Protocol version: 10

 

What is causing this error? I don't believe that godaddy is going to let me upgrade anything... am I screwed?

 

Anyone with any info PLEASE respond.
