Hi there all,

I'm just wandering what you all think. I am running OSC and its nice and fast until I get more than 100 shoppers online. then it just crawls!

infact I have to turn the store off because we just get shoppers ringing us saying its unusable.

this is happening because we are having a sale and when we sent out our newsletter to our 3000 subscribers the site becomse unusable.

I really need to fix this because we ow our suppliers a heap of cash and so need people to shop :(

I am running on a vps server

4 GB Burst RAM

768 MB Guaranteed RAM

4 IP Addresses

The host tels me its a problem with coding. I'm not a programer so I don't know what to think.

I am paying $129

what do you guys think do I need to upgrade to a biger server?

Cheers

Very difficult to give an answer to this question.

If you made a lot of modifications to your shop, especially by adding or changing database queries, that might put a lot of unnessessary strain on your server.

There are a few things you can do to optimise those queries. Reading through this thread is a good starting point: http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=119077

If you post a link to your shop, I can check for further options like using your clients browser caching to reduce the number of requests made to the server while browsing your shop.

Feedback and suggestions on my shop welcome.

Note: My advice is based on my own experience or on something I read in these forums. No guarantee it'll work for you! Make sure that you always BACKUP the database and the files you are going to change so that you can rollback to a working version if things go wrong.

Almost guaranteed... get off the VPS and onto a dedicated server. The next thing is to find out how many queries your store generates for any given page and see if you can bring those down ( see some of the optimization threads here in the forums and especially this one )

Then see if you can optimize your images.

Then see if caching will help.

Then turn on GZIP compression if it's not already.

Hope that's helpful,

Iggy

My impression of VPS is that it's an excellent way to serve up static pages or for light(er) use (all based on a VPS with less than a 3rd the capacity you describe).

That you can have 100 simultaneous users on your site is actually pretty impressive given that osC can generate a lot of db calls depending on your setup.

So, no, they're not that bad. Just not as fast as a dedicated box would be.

at least for this you should use cache modules. They can greatly improve performance and reduce b/w usage.

All 3 modules can co-exist.
