I see that there are enough information out there to install osCommerce to run on a remote host but I don't find enough information to run it on a local host or workstation. Can someone please explain what needs to be configured and changed specifically to MySQL, PHP and/or Apache/IIS before installing osCommerce?

Not much. You should have Register Globals on as well as Register Long Arrays and that should take care of it for a stock osC.

Then it's run the installer as usual.

I enabled both of those in php.ini. However, after zillion times of reinstalling PHP and MySQL, now whenever I go to localhost/*.php, I get a blank page. Sometimes, I get "page cannot be found" error.

Maybe give XAMPP a try if you haven't
