Yes, that is a good link to explain it all. The posters in that thread are deviating a little from the problem.

Basically, if your using a linux server then secure it with .htaccess using a .htpasswd file below root (or via cpanel) or if on Windows CHMOD the directory or find a suitable protection contribution seems to be the jist of it.

Hi,

I didn't know you could chmod in windows. I did find my solution in that thread. My main mistake was that I didn't know where to look for the "path" and my other mix up was putting the htaccess' password file in an upper directory instead of below the directory that I was trying to protect. (or something like that) , but I am so glad that I finally got that all straightened out. Still browsing for tips. Love this site. :)

Casey,

Another way of adding a level of security to the admin side...is to rename admin to something else and update the configure.php on the admin side...No one will knoe the new admin path unless you tell them...

I hope this helps

Thanks for all your help guys, I found a way to do the login screen.

Well I would appreciate it if you could tell me how to do it. I have read all the entries and to be honest, you might as well be talking another language. I have no idea what the terms CHMOD, .htaccess or .htpasswd file mean. Can anyone explain it in plain English?

All i get from support is that i need to use Password Protect in control panel, but which folders do i protect? I don't see 'admin' in the folder list anywhere and i have no idea what any of them are for.

And if anyone can tell me how i can 'set permissions' so that i can upload a graphic for a new book, you will make me very happy. I could spend my life trying to set this up (it feels like i have already). Isn't there a way to make it simple?

Thanks guys :)

Honestly, just install the updates to the latest version and your admin password protection is built in...... You should update anyway.

There is a contribution for admin access level that will help.

William,

  1. "Password Protect in control panel" = This is referring to the control panel that came with your hosting account, normally called "Cpanel". You may or may not have such a thing. Most worthy web hosts will supply this tool to their customers as a means to add features to their web site. Contact your web host for the link to your web's control panel. The control panel is the easiest way to secure your osCommerce "Admin" folder. If you have a control panel, use it to password protect your osCommerce Admin folder only. This procedure will automatically create two files; a .htaccess and a .htpasswd file.
  2. "CHMOD" = This is the code for "change mode" or "change permission" settings for a particular file that resides on the server (your web site). Each file/folder in your web site has a permission setting.
CHMOD is a function on all Unix, Linux and FreeBSD systems that allows varying levels of permissions to be set on files and directories in relation to the application attempting to access them. CHMOD controls the configuration of execute, write and read accessibility (permissions). It forms an integral part of script security.
Here is a useful tutorial on this: http://www.zachjorgensen.net/za/chmodtutor.html
  3. Here is an example on how to use CHMOD with your FTP client software:
To access the chmod command from WS_FTP:
    • Left click on a file or directory on your remote window to highlight it.
    • Right click on the file or directory and from the menu that appears choose "Operations", then "FTP Commands"
    • From the menu, select the "CHMOD(unix)" option.
    • On the "Remote File Permissions" dialogue box you will be able to set the check boxes or enter in the chmod number
    • Note: Older versions of WS_FTP may not allow you to enter a number and the location of the chmod command may be slightly different, but it will still appear somewhere on the right-click menu.

[*]"Uploading a Graphic" = Well, this really has nothing to do with permission settings other than setting your "images" folder permission settings so that the public can view them. If your osCommerce site is properly displaying the default images, then your permission settings for this folder is already correctly set and you should not have to do anything else to it.

The product graphics are uploaded in your store's admin section in the same area in which you would add your product descriptions.

To add products in osCommerce please follow the steps below:

  • Log into your administration page for OsCommerce.
  • Click on the Catalog link within the main area. This will display all your categories that you have created.
  • Click on the category name for which you wish to add the product, or the sub-category to.
  • To open that category, double-click the name after it is highlighted.
  • If you wish to add a sub-category, then just click the New Category button and follow the same steps as before.
  • To add the product, click New Product.
  • Now complete the requested fields that you wish to use.
  • Their is also an option to add your Products Image. If you would like to display a picture of your product you would use the browse button and find the picture on your computer. Select it and the file will appear in the Products Image text box.
  • Once you have entered all of the data, then you can add product attributes like colour. If the product allows the visitor to choose a specific colour or option then we need to enter this in the Product Attributes section afterwards.
  • But first click preview and click Insert to create the product.

Hope this helped clear things up for you,

Bill Kellum

Bill (or anyone reading this) - You were so helpful for William and I wondered if you might offer me some assistance.

I am doing all of the steps you mentioned, but I cannot get a product image to come up in the preview. It just comes up as a box with a red x in it.

After selecting "New Product", I go into the page where I put a title, price, etc.

In the Products Image space, I use the browse button to browse for the image I want on my computer. The text in the box now says:

C:\Documents and Settings\Nicole Jones\My Documents\HTML\DietFreedomPkg.jpg

I then press preview and no image comes up. Should I be putting this in a different format? Do I need to upload it somewhere onto the server? It seems like it should be so easy, and yet, it's just not working.

Thank you for any help that you or anyone else can offer!

Nicole

I figured out my problem - I needed to change my permission settings to 777.

Have a great day!
