Benjjj6 Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Am I right in thinking that with Website Payments Pro my customers do not need to sign up for a PayPal account as they do with WP Standard? Also, if i choose to integrate WP Pro will i need to get my own SSL cerificate or is this provided by PayPal as they are still processing the payment? thanks, Ben Quote
Jack_mcs Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Creating a paypal account to pay is not required. It is an option in your paypal profile settings. The main differences between the two is that with paypal pro, the customers don't have to leave your shop to pay and paypal pro has a fee of $20 (last I cheked) per month where paypal standard doesn't. You should have a certificate regradless of the paypal module. Without it, your customers data is not fully protected and it will cost you sales. Benjjj6 Posted June 23, 2007 Author Posted June 23, 2007 could you recommend somewhere where i can get a cheap SSL certificate, my hosting company are offering me an SSL Certificate + Dedicated IP Address for £59.99/$120 a year, is this a good price? Quote
dynamoeffects Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 $10/month is about as cheap as you should go with webhosting. If that price comes with an SSL certificate, that's a pretty good deal -- assuming that it isn't a self-signed certificate or shared certificate. Otherwise, shop around. You can get 2 year Comodo certificates for $99. Quote Please use the forums for support! I am happy to help you here, but I am unable to offer free technical support over instant messenger or e-mail.

Godaddy has a cert for $20 and namecheap has them at $12.88. That's about $8-$9 month for the dedicated IP where they usually run $1 to $5. But if they are including an installation charge too, it might be OK. You may not have a choice since some hosts require you purchase from them. Benjjj6 Posted June 27, 2007 Author Posted June 27, 2007 hi, What benefits would having a dedicated IP give me? If I went with GoDaddy's Single Certificate for $20/year how is this different from competitors who are charging much more? How can i tell that this is not a 'shared' certificate? and once i have the certificate can I place it on as many pages on my site as I want to, or only one? https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/ssl/ssl.asp?ci=9039 Quote
Jack_mcs Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 There aren't any benefits of the private IP. It is just required if you want a private certificate. Godaddy is a reseller. There are only a handful of companies that actually produce the certificates. Godaddy purchases them in bulk and resells them. Many other site son the web off the very same certificate for many times that price. If the cert is a 256 bit one, then the cost will be higher. But any 128 bit cert that is higher is either overcharging or they are offerring some little option to justfify it, like a more attractive site seal. A shared certificate is issued to someone else. If the url of your site, when using the cert, isn't one that you paid for, then you are using a shared one. If you purchase a cert, it can only be purchased for one domain name. So you can only use it on one site.
