Session.auto_start In Windows?

I am running a normal website which utilizes a great online tool for wysiwig editing and database storage of the actual web-pages.

But in order to get it to work properly I had to change my php.ini file from

0 to 1 on session.auto_start

Now I am getting the error message from my oscommerce and I cannot just turn the error off...cuz it has broken the ordering process...

Whenever I try and add something to the cart, the next page is just white - like there is no connection at all to the database.

I am running on a windows box in PHP 4.

Migrating to UNIX as we speak to control the php config via .htaccess....but that is literally going to take me weeks.

Is there an easier way to run oscommerce with auto_start set to 1 ??
