Guest Posted November 6, 2002 Posted November 6, 2002 Hi all, After months of getting this right, adding and removing products, changing the look and feel and eventually getting the site on line I have come up with the end result. Please let me know your thoughts on how I can improve it, or what's done right and what's done wrong. As this is the first major attempt I dont expect things to be perfect but I know that over time it will get better! Let me know your thoughts and spend some money if you like :D Take care, James
mattice Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 very nice! Looking for that giftwrap module though I could not find it....? Other then that it is a very nice shop, my compliments. Mattice "Politics is the art of preventing people from taking part in affairs which properly concern them"
CC Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 Hey James Isnt this like the 3rd time you have posted this as a new site?? I could be wrong, but anyhow I agree with Mattice, lovely site, looks very cool. I like the font for the writing you have over your images. What font is this? Very nice again mate. Hope it inspires others. CC.
eureka Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 Well done. Looks very good - can hardly tell it's osCommerce. Out of interest, which bank are you using for the Merchant ID and which payment gateway? One small thing - the tab color doesn't change for the selected pages.
CC Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 One more thing from me, but bear in mind i am in the UK. It is very slow to load, this maybe me though and not anyone else. Like I say I am in the UK and if your in land of OZ that could be why... CC.
Guest Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 Thanks for the compliments - yes I hope it inspires. One of the problems I had was in OScommerce's lack of creativity on sites (not against the design but with the way people have implemented it). I was keen to get away from the look and change it. There are alot of elements which are very oscommerce (like listing), subcategories, but a small change I am sure was in order :-) As for bank - it's camtech (oscommerce module)! I may take out Paypal because when a customer makes and order it does not appear, only has that they made a payment. This is embarressing to have to ask a question to a customer regarding what they spent :( Tab colour - can anyone help me out? is there a way to do this, cause I only edited header.php. But I'd like it to change (similar to other sites :-) Let me know and yes - we are based in Australia :D
Guest Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 Great Job!! I really like what you have done... The layout looks really good with OSC.. . . Good job on implementing it into your own dsign! As far as tab color, you could do a few things. . . javascript, when you click on a tab, it changes from one image to another, aka rollovers. You could also do some type of DHTML stuff, but for this case I would think javascript would be the way to go . . . Let me see if I can dig up an example for you *if* you don't find anything. . . . .
johnglobal Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 I think you have done a good job also I like the layout Would you be willing to share that ? How did you implement the tabs etc ?, I have trouble implementing html with php Thanks John
CC Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 John Adding tabs, images, rollovers etc are very easy. Use something like Dreamweaver MX if you dont feel confident in writing in HTML, then open header.php and add what you want. Upload Hey presto! Your sorted. DW MX is particularly easy to use as it has the features to add roll overs, buttons, images straight in without you having to do any of the coding. It aint cheap, but it is worth it! Alternative is use Frontpage if you have it. CC.

This is embarressing to have to ask a question to a customer regarding what they spent :( Hi James! Really nice site... Its good to see osCommerce that looks so fine About PayPal, before taking it off you should try the PayPal IPN Payment Module contrib... it will help you with that problem you have with payments. Best regards and good sales! :)
Guest Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 Hi guys again! Thanks again! (wont someone offer me some negatives?? :-) As for rollovers - I know how to create rollovers, but it's more the case of if a customer clicks on comics for example, it will go to a page. However if the rollover was to remain active (i.e. change to another color) how will this work? Why I ask is that your only working with one page (being default.php). I will take on board the rollovers, as they will be relatively easy to do, it's now how I can do a amazon style header and implement it into oscommerce. Regarding how I did this - EASY!!! Basically I create images everywhere (and the OSXDOC material is a god sent!) then used them instead of the standard text. Changed the CSS (which involved some tweaking) and edited primarily footer and header files. It does follow the same feeling of Amazon, but I wanted to see how the market would react. It has been postive with some sales already! So yes all that hardwork i put in helped!!! As for sharing the design secrets - easily done.... the trick is imagniation. I used some ideas from the feature websites, and the module for reviews under product description is a very wise thing to have. If you would like me to document it I most certainly can, as it would be good for our records as well!. Take it easy everyone, and look forward to hearing from you! Cheers, James
Ajeh Posted November 7, 2002 Posted November 7, 2002 The shop does look rather nice. However, you might think about using one of the thumbnail image contributions so that your images are much smaller and faster to load, then when clicked on the larger ones can be used. This would allow the pages to draw a lot faster.
Guest Posted November 8, 2002 Posted November 8, 2002 I want to know more about this gift wrap module you seem to have implemented. I didn't want to create an account to see that part near the end of the check out though. Any tips??
hobbzilla Posted November 8, 2002 Posted November 8, 2002 Good looking site! Well done. If it were me, I too would want the current page tab to be a different color, this can be easily done with a function that would output the html for each button. You could pass the function image attributes as well as color1 or color2 depending on the file name and cpath numbers (only if default.php). This would allow you to keep the single navigational included file for each page.. without having to manually have each page with differnet html out for each individual page. One more thing of note is that it looks like the sorting under the comics section should be reworked to make sure that Wolverine #75 doesn't appear inbetween #107 & #93.
Guest Posted November 8, 2002 Posted November 8, 2002 Hi again, Linda: Can you please point me in the right direction regarding the thumbnails? I did install 3 types of images but a thumbnail would be best :-) Gift module - EASY!!!! - Step 1) Copy flatrate shipping and rename it giftwrap Step 2) Change text to read gift wrap Step 3) Up the price to cover gift wrap Step 4) Your done :-) As for sorting - please help! I love that all of you are helping out, and as I said - I never think this will ever be perfect - (and I'm sure they say that about amazon.com or ebay) - so every little bit of extra help would be great! Thanks guys!
rubygirl Posted November 8, 2002 Posted November 8, 2002 First off, nice job! Layout is very easy to navigate. As I was browsing, I tried to walk through the order process and here is what I got. Entered Comics; Dreamwave - clicked to order: Transformers: Armada #1 - when I clicked on the picture to order, I noticed the "In Stock" box with the discounted price. I changed the order to 4 and clicked order. I then received error that the item was out of stock. So after poking around, I realized that you only had 2 items left so when I tried to order more, I was restricted. Isn't there a way for the In Stock section to list how many are left? If so, you might want to activate that. THe only way I knew, was because I was curious about the error and just kept changing the quantity number until it worked. Just food for thought...
johnglobal Posted November 11, 2002 Posted November 11, 2002 Thanks for this. I created the tabs no problem using dreamweaver, but before I insert them into the header.php I have a few questions. 1. html uses paths to reference an image e.g /images/tab.gif This path will not be the same when you switch to secure server. php uses a reference to a directory that changes when you switch to secure. do you know how to get around this ? 2. If i set the url on one of the tabs to go to categroy 2 for example, what is the correct syntax, making sure to reference the session id ? Thanks John John Adding tabs, images, rollovers etc are very easy. Use something like Dreamweaver MX if you dont feel confident in writing in HTML, then open header.php and add what you want. mattice Posted November 11, 2002 Posted November 11, 2002 Thanks again! (wont someone offer me some negatives??) Just because you tempted me I found this one: Your logo reminds me too much of Dexter :) Not that it has got anything to do with your site though, that's schweet. Trusten Posted November 11, 2002 Posted November 11, 2002 this shop looks really really cute. good job.
alougher Posted November 13, 2002 Posted November 13, 2002 I think your site looks bloody marvelous. Are willing to share the code? :)
Guest Posted November 13, 2002 Posted November 13, 2002 Mattice: Yep - it does - used part font and part graphics, but I thought it sums up the stereotypical geek - but hence why we say geek is cool :-) The secret - www.oscdox.com - that's where it is all from. I havent done anything marvellous, and truth be known I eventually want to see OsCommerce become a substitute for an AMAZON.com style website. The trick is graphics - draw and redraw and get them right. Code is very important - but appearances are everything. Sharing the code? Easy = www.oscommerce.com :-) and a few contributions. :D * Reviews in Product Listing and Description * Small, Medium, Large Images * Australian shipping and modules The Product Description: I created the graphics first in Fireworks, then created my HTML template. Edited descriptions in Dreamweaver and pasted them into the new product listing in oscommerce. Then your done. My only complaint that I am trying to address is image sizes. I will get there eventually. I think there needs to be an auto-thumbnail creator - have this and you have a winning shop! Cheers, James
