Guest Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 You can also ask your host how often they back up everything. The should do it nightly but they will also probably copy over everything the next night so they only keep the most current backup. If you think you might need a copy of your site from them call them right away, do not wait or it may be too late. Keeping your own backups if very important also, as previously stated.

mpiscopo Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I use wsftp for my backups. I manually back up my entire website after every update (backup to my local drive). I also have a CRON job running nightly to create a backup file of the database (file is stored on the server). I then have wsftp automatically download the backup of the database nightly (actually early morning around 4:00 AM). In addition my hosting company makes a weekly backup of the server. So they will have the website along with a copy of the database which can be up to 7 days old. It is always best to rely on yourself. If you're making a lot of sales and loss of your website, or office equipment would greatly impact your business, you should have a Disaster Recovery Plan. Cover typical outages and actaually do a "Fire Drill" and practice a recovery from a disaster. For example, if you're using QuickBooks to process orders what would happen if someone broke in and stole the computer it's on? If your webserver totally crashed, what steps would you take to recover? If you are just beginning and not generating a lot of sales yet, a disaster recovery plan isn't necessary. But do make sure that you back everything up and have confidence in the backups.
