My Store Stopped Working, Help With Why?

Hi,

I've used oscommerce now for 4 years. in feb I changed to creloaded.

I use powweb as a webhost. they have been having mysql and cgi issues.

a couple of days ago, I started getting this message when going to my store:

1046 - No database selected

select configuration_key as cfgKey, configuration_value as cfgValue from configuration

TEP_DB_ERRORR

I have made no changes to my store since april. it just stopped working yesterday (about 36 hrs now). powweb support just tells me I have an error in my script. they claim they haven't done anything though their are numerous other posts on the boards from users who's mysql databases have been corrupted (they are apparently doing some upgrading of servers or software or something).

since powweb refuses to acknowledge they have done something I can get no help from them.

what I need to know is, where do I start looking for the problem? can someone for the moment just point me to where I need to start? I have another creloaded store on powweb that is still working fine.

if someone could just point me to where to begin to find the problem (what php pages) then I'd really appreciate it.

oh, and if anyone has suggestions for a reliable host then those would be appreciated as well ;) I'm going to attempt to get this back up and running and then find a new host.

thank you all in advance,

Melinda

Oh well.. first of all, I'm sorry to hear that.

By the fact that other people are crying for corrupted mysql server, I think there was something happened with mysql server???

Did you check your mysql database? it seems that the osc cannot find the database it used to use.

it can happen only by two ways:

1. the name of the database in configure.php has been changed.

2. the name of the database in mysql server has been changed or... even worse.. the database was corrupted.. or removed..;;

I think the best thing you can do about this is to backup everything to your PC including files and database, then ask the host provider to revert your files and database back to like.. April or sometime that they didn't have any issue.

They usually backup all the files and database don't they? ask them to just revert it back to some date that your site has been working fine.

I've never had any issues like this so I don't have much more to tell you.. but this is what I think of it.

Hope you can resolve it with no big problems.

P.S., so.. you now think you should backup everything into your PC on regular basis right? That's what I do.. I never trust host providers living like 2,000 miles away from me.

yea, too little too late :( I have a backup of my products but not the entire store or database.

I found the knowledgebase on that error msg and checked both config files and they are still pointing to the right database.

powweb has finally admitted it is there fault. the database is gone. it shows my ops panel but isn't there if you go to phpmyadmin.

they are trying to find it/replace it/whatever. the database is now showing back up but the tables in mysql stop at tables starting with p so p onward is lost at the moment.

I have a mysql database backup. I tried to create a new database and import the files into it. but the file is too large and it times out.

does anyone have any suggestions on how to import the file? is there a way to break the existing sql file into pieces to upload? can I look at the sql file and try starting at where it looks to be stopping and import a file with from there are or are there certain mysql commands at the top of the original file I need to duplicate?

as I said, they do have a place to import an existing sql file but it doesn't import completely :(

thank you again.

There is a limit on the size of the file if you use phpMyAdmin, but no limit if you use SSH. As PowWeb messed up do this --> upload the sql backup file to the root of your website --> then tell PowWeb it is there --> and ask them to install it for you using SSH.

It's the least they can do.

yeah it's probably the upload filesize limit on php when you use phpmyadmin. it's by default 2MB.

it's best to upload the sql file via ftp, and ask the admin to import it for you.

Well.. at least they have admitted it is their fault.

that's a good thing.

I hope they correct things soon.

turns out that part of the backup is corrupted. I have not heard back from powweb since alerting them that their restore wasn't complete. I am (obviously) looking for a new host.

what I'm doing at the moment is importing table by table from that backup. there are a couple of tables that just don't work. not sure yet what I will do for that.

can someone tell me how to prevent this frm happening again? I have a backup of all the files on my hard drive so could completely re-upload my store via ftp. I also have a backup of my products through EP. but I did not realize I needed to back up the database (idiot). what is the best way to prevent this from happening again? I can backup from my ops pan through powweb but they don't have a backup that goes back before this corruption. and I would have the problems of timing out on an install but if this happens again I could at least have an sql backup that could be reinstalled by the host even if it's older.

is that what I need to do, start backing up the sql database? how often do the rest of you do it?

thanks again for your responses. blanking powweb.

well, duh, I suddenly remembered the function in admin that backs up your database. the other backup I had I had gotten from powwebs op panel that lets you backup a database.

that admin backup was several months old but it worked. now I just need to update products sold. wish I had remembered this earlier, what a dummy. it still them about 2-3 hours to reinsert the database but everythings fine now.

I had them reinstall it into a new test database and pointed the config files to that new name. I've ran a test purchase and all was fine but is there something I am forgetting to change? I changed the name of the database in the two config files.

just worried I've forgotten something else I need to change! thank you.
