dumbassgeek
Hi, My site has been up and running for well over a year now and everything is fine. Problem is my current hosting plan is not satisfying all the requirements I now need (since my website has become more popular). I want to switch to a dedicated server as even the top level hosting plan with the current company is not working. Is it a simple case of transferring the files and database across to the new server? I have added many contributions to my site and have the site exactly as I want it. Is there anything to watch out for? Is there any difference between windows and unix hosting when using oscommerce? I'm using windows based hosting at the minute. I also think I remember reading that you have to set in the configuration of oscommerce if you are using windows or unix, where is that setting located? Thanks in advance DG

Thanks in advance DG I've never gone from Windows to UNIX (just UNIX to UNIX). but other than that it was pretty easy to move sites to a new server. The only tricky part was making sure the new database was updated with changes to the old database up to the point where the new server came online. It would have been easier to freeze the old site for 24 hours or so but I didn't want to do that.

I was thinking of taking the site down for the day while it all happens but as you said I'm not sure I want to do that. Can anyone tell me where the setting for unix or windows is in the admin panel? I'm convinced I saw something like that at one stage. Thanks
Jack_mcs
You should always choose Linux (Unix) for oscommerce shops. As far as moving the site, copy the files and database and change your configure files to use the new serve infomation. If your site is busy, you really should block it before doing that to avod losing database information. Thanks From http://www.oscommerce.info/kb/osCommerce/I...and_Upgrades/41 Although there are two compressed file archives available for download here, one for Linux/Unix and one for Windows, they contain identical files. There is only one set of files, regardless of which operating system the server is using.

It can be done but is no where near as straight-forward as on non-linux. There are other such problems. They popup here on the forums from time-to-time. Search for forums for Windows will find such threads if you have the time to go through them. dumbassgeek
After all that my current host is unix already so I'll move to unix then (I'm not sure why I thought it was windows). Another stupid question: My current host uses zeus as a web server and the new host is apache. Does that cause any problems? As you can see I am very new to all this. Thanks for all your replies so far.
