Apache? Sql Update? Help!

OK, I've been working on a site for nearly a year. I've been slowly learning OSC as I go along (absolutely no previous experience with coding or web design/development before taking on this project), and recently I've been starting on adding Contributions. Up until now, whenever I've needed to modify my site, I've just gone to the File Manager through the Control Panel on my web hosts' site. (The site was already live, just completely unmodified from the base OSC code, when I took it over from the previous owner)

That said...I have read before that I need Apache, PHP and mySQL installed and configured together on my system, but I was always able to update and modify the files online before, so I never had a need to and never bothered. Now, the contribution I'm working on (USPS shipping 2.8d) has an update that tells me to do an SQL update... and I'm totally lost. What is an SQL update and how the hell do I do it?

Also, in preparation for this, I did DL and set up PHP, Apache and mySQL, and followed the configuration steps I read online, so the three are now working together to create a full development environment. That done, how do I connect/configure the apache to the live site and the mySQL to the database I already have?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum for questions like this, so mods, please feel free to move me, or if anyone knows another forum that would be better suited for these kind of detailed, noob questions I'm all ears. I thank everyone in advance for ANY help.

Download the latest version os osc and inside you will find a update-20060817.txt you will need to do a step by step update if you have modifications to any of the files listed within.

Your errors are due to outdated php and server updated php and mysql

I'm not getting any errors, I just don't know what I'm doing in the first place. I've never used mySQL or Apache, I just DLed them for the first time this morning, and I don't know how to connect those programs to the site that's already online.

The live site is running OSC 2.2 SR2... that is the most current version, right?

Ok not an error, I was unsure of your post guess too much info. I think what you are saying is you don't know how to run the sql query that is included in the contrib................

If your oscommerce catalog is older that (17th August 2006) you will need to update your oscommerce and again the update is in the latest download. If you can not understand the instructions that are listed in the download you may have to hire someone that can.

If you site is live on a hosted server then you have Apache, PHP and mySQL installed.

The update sql in the instructions should have told you how to do the sql query and if not you need to log into your hosted control panel and then log into your database (should be phpmyadmin) once loged in you will see the 4 or 5 links on the top left. Locate the one that says SQL and in the window paste the sql update and the hit enter or go or whatever. You will get a success or not seccess. If successful you then close the browser.
