FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. Why do I need an FTP account? Using an FTP username along with its password allows you to connect to your site through the File Transfer Protocol. You may need an FTP client, which is a software program that you have to install on your computer. The FTP account details are also used by FrontPage and other website creator tools. How do I create an FTP account? Please fill in the all the required information in order to create a working FTP account: Username: Specify the name of the user and choose a domain using the drop menu. Please note that the username may not exceed 16 characters including the suffix with the domain name. Password: Type in the desired password in both fields. Note that the password should be between 2 and 20 characters in lenght. Access Path: Choose the web folder, which will be accessible to the new user. If you leave it to the default /www/, the new user will gain access to all folders of your domain and subdomain names. Why do I need several FTP accounts? You may create several FTP accounts, each one leading to a different folder. By specifying a username and its access path, you may allow certain users to access definite web folders. For example, username 'admin' may have access to modify the contents of all subfolders, while username 'josh' may enter only the 'members' subfolder of your website. Specifically, FTP is a commonly used protocol for exchanging files over any network that supports the TCP/IP protocol (such as the Internet or an intranet). There are two computers involved in an FTP transfer: a server and a client. The FTP server, running FTP server software, listens on the network for connection requests from other computers. The client computer, running FTP client software, initiates a connection to the server. Once connected, the client can do a number of file manipulation operations such as uploading files to the server, download files from the server, rename or delete files on the server and so on. Any software company or individual programmer is able to create FTP server or client software because the protocol is an open standard. Virtually every computer platform supports the FTP protocol. This allows any computer connected to a TCP/IP based network to manipulate files on another computer on that network regardless of which operating systems are involved (if the computers permit FTP access). There are many existing FTP client and server programs. FTP servers can be setup anywhere between game servers, voice servers, internet hosts, and other physical servers. from: wikipedia.org
toptiara Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 If you don't have much knowledge of setting these kind of environments up, it can be a real nightmare. Fortunately some kind souls have made things simple for those who don't have extensive IT knowledge. I'd recommend you visit and download XAMPP. Not only does it give you very clear instructions, there is an all-in-one installation package to help you get everything up and running. Once that is up and running, you should hopefully have an easy time configuring and setting it up. Hand made jewellery and tiaras on our website Please bear with me. Im an osC noobie!
