Removing main text and gifs

Can some kind soul post a definitive description of how to remove all text and the bullet gifs from the main page. The instruction

The text highlighted in green may be modified - it is important to keep the define() of the TEXT_MAIN keyword. To remove the text for TEXT_MAIN completely, the following example is used where only two single quote characters exist:

 

define('TEXT_MAIN', '');

does not seem to work for me. I get a parse error on line 12. I can modify the text ok but am unable to remove all, incl the gifs.

 

I have trawled through the forum posts for hours and made efforts to find a solution but between broken links and tailed off forum topics I haven't been successful. Some helpful person said there were at least 50 published solutions but I couldn't find one and no, he didn't post one!

So please help .... it's not only for me!
