madcrazygirl
Hi Have read through a number of threads but can someone please advise me in simple terms  I currently have my shop running on shared ssl and all is fine but I would like to run an affiliate program and think this will need cookies enabled and this needs a full ssl cert? Is this true and also apart from the browser address not changing are there any other benefits to a dedicated ssl? Some threads seem to suggest that I have to pay extra to my hosting company for dedicated IP etc above the cost of the cert - is this the case? Finally how difficult is it to get this installed and I am real puzzled by the variety of ssl certs and providers so can anyone pm me with their recommendation please. Many thanks. Jack_mcs
The affilitates contribution doesn't require cookies to be set but even if it did, it can run on a shared cert (with the exception of a few hosts). The only other advantage of a private cet is that you can get a site seal displaying an image saying the site is protected. All hosts charge for the use of a dedicated IP. Some include a free one in the initial hosting package but you usually have to purchase the ssl from them, which costs more than normal. You have to generate a csr file to be able to purchase the ssl. If your host allows that option in your control panel, then it might work for you. Some hosts require a restart of one of the server processes, in which case you would not be able to install it anyway. You should ask your host if you can install the cert on your own. Some hosts won't allow a private cert unless it is purchased from them and some won't allow them at all (stay away from those hosts). You can purchase a cert for $20 at goddady or for $15 at namecheap. Both companies are well-respected with excellent service. madcrazygirl
Thank you Jack. What a dope, I was sure I saw somewhere sometime ago that cookies were needed and assumed it would be necessary for the site to be remembered. Is there more than one affiliate perhaps and if so can you point to to the correct one? As that was my only real motivation for the time being then I will shelve the ssl for a later date! Jack_mcs
As far as I know, there is only one affiliate contribution (see above menu, community->Contributions), although I could be wrong. The ssl should be installed anyway though. It will probably cost you a loss of customers not having one since their data on your site won't be secure.
