"Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client"

I know there are multiple, infact it seems like a billion responses to this in a billion different locations, BUT it seems like 99% of those answers don't fit the criteria my hosting provider is under. Also, I don't really know how to directly fix the problem by following most/all of those solutions.

So my question to you is, how do I fix this problem?

First I'll tell you that I haven't just given up in two seconds, I've tried for over three hours, manipulating new databases, etc.

Basically to my understanding, I'm supposed to

- download the osCommerce Windows America

- extract files

- log into my FTP

- make a new database by going to -hosting > databases > mysql > create database

- then make a database server by going to - hosting > databases > SQL server > create database

- then upload all of the files from the osCommerce Windows America through FTP to my website

- then import the osCommerce.sql file into my database

- then go to www.domain.com/catalog/install

- click install

- leave first step both checked

- then on the second step I'm a little confused on what to put in which box. and I'm confused because I have the mysql database, and I have the SQL server database, and then I have the hosting information, and all of them have usernames and passwords, and the mysql database, and the SQL server both have host names, so I'm a little confused

I've tried most every combination I can think of, and the most sensible combinations give me this message: "Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client".

Other combinations which I'm pretty sure are wrong totally give me other error messages.

Thanks for your help

i have EXACTLY the same problem.

anyone got a solution yet? or even managed to use oscommerce with a godaddy webhost / sql DB?

you do a manual install basically, extract the files upload them etc, create the dbases and then...edit your configure.php files to match your server settings. There is a huge number of posts covering how the configure.php files should be set.

I have the same problem with godaddy. oscommerce stops before creating the database. I tried editing the configure.php without luck; any other clues?

what other clues? You have't tried to install manually why?

And you edit the configure.php files in your local pc, so what you mean "without luck"

Hi,

I am, BY NO MEANS, any type of expert, not a programmer, just self taught, but I host with godaddy and managed to get the installation to work. Are you running windows or linux? Godaddy told me that I needed to switch from windows to linux, so I did (I have a lot of other issues, but I won't go into that here as I'd like to try to help you a little, not dump my problems hehe). I'm not sure if windows vs linux is the problem or not. I was able to create the db with sql, no problem.

I can't exactly remember the installation clearly now, but I know that you see two windows through the installation that ask you for the same information. The second time you see that window you just need to input the same information that you inputted on the first window, that is, sql host name, db name etc.

Perhaps lodge a help question with godaddy, like I did, and tell them you're installing oscommerce and what is it in your hosting that could be causing the error you're receiving.

I don't know if the above will help your problem, but I hope it does.

Good luck, all the best and hope it works out!

  • 2 years later...

i had to change from windows hosting to linux hosting. sorted my problem instantly:D

Nearly a year ago my boss was swindled by GoDaddy into thinking that he would be able to use OsCommerce with their Windows Hosting. Got him for a pretty good penny too. GoDaddy says that OsCommerce is compateable with their Windows Hosting accounts when it truely is not, because just like everyone says, you really need a linux server to correctly impliment this software. Sending mails thru SMTP doesn't work no matter how you try or what you do, even with ALL settings checking and checked. So thankfully, as soon as the time is up, we are moving to a new host. Basically their are swindlers and no one should host with them, they have so many technical problems and gimmicks to get more cash outta you is unreal.

Sure they can switch the hosting from Windows to Linux BUT they also charge you for it.
