Guest Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007  In looking into obtaining an SSL Certificate for my site Miscellany Shoppe (which by the way is still in "build mode"), I went to my hosting company to inquire what is needed to have an SSL site - (I am all about promoting safe online shopping with all the lurkers out on the internet), and was informed the following: "You will need two things for an SSL, a dedicated IP (which costs $30 per year) and an SSL Certificate (which can be purchased through XXXXXXXX for $45 per year) SSL certificates can only be installed on your main domain on the account and cannot be for a subdomain, addon domain or parked domain. If you would like to purchase the SSL through XXXXXXXX you will need to go to SSL Manager from your XXXXXXXX cpanel and generate a Key and a CSR. After both are created contact XXXXXXXX Support to request the purchase." Is this typical, or is there some other way to secure this without having to pay a yearly fee of $75.00? Quote
Jack_mcs Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 Yes, it is fairly typical. A dedicated IP is required. Most hosts charge for that. The $45 is higher than it need be. Godaddy offers them for $20 and namecheap has them for $15 although your host may require you to purchase the $45 one. Still without a cert, you will lose customers so $75 is a reasonable cost if it will prevent that.
