SSL - how to activate it?

Hi everybody!

I am new in this forum, but I have already read lots of interesting topics, but nothing about the SSL installation.

I have never used SSL.

My web site has already been published without SSL. I consider very important to ensure the highest protection to the customers who visit and buy products in my web site.

Can you tell me which the steps/phases to activate the SSL are?

What I actually know is:

1) buy the certificate

2) enter it in the server (if the server supports it)

3) swop the web site from HTTP to HTTPS

4) reinstall OSCOMMERCE.

Is that it?!?!?

I am using a protection password for the admin directory - .httpacces. Could it cause problems?

Could the web site become slower?

Thanks for helping me!

Steps 1 & 2 are correct. There's no reason for 3 & 4 unless you are on a host that rules dual directories. That is very archaic at this point and will cause you grief in the future. If you are not on such a host, then you just need to change your configure files to use the ssl. The cert will fine in admin but whenever it is enabled, the load on the server increases a little. This is generally nothing to worry about but it can cause a slow down of the site which is why you shouldn't run the whole shop in ssl mode, as some sites do.
