Product Model Drop Down Menus

Looking to create 'Product Model Drop Down Menus' where a user can select their model of printer.

 

Then the shop will displaly all cartridges capatible with that model of printer.

 

A system very similar to:

-So use master products (the printer model) with slaves (the cartridges) all added to the product catalog?

-Set the price of the master to 0 and removed the add to cart button when a master is shown?

another thought:

 

-Create main categories for the printers (epson, hp etc.), then maybe subcats like hp deskjet, hp psc etc. for the cartridges create another subcat to ie hp -> hp compatible. then you just use the normal category listing?
