How can I skip product detail page - go direct to pop up?

Hello. I have bought an osCommerce template to create a catalogue type shop window without an online sale option. Everything is looking reasonable but I need some assistance with one of the edits I would like to make.

 

I have removed the prices and buttons that normally display below the pictures of the products on the index and product pages. Normally you would click a picture to display a new page that shows further detail about the product, with a link to launch a pop-up window to show a larger picture of that product. As we are not including details, I need to go straight from the picture on the products or index page (showing newest items) to the pop-up window with the image in it.

 

I tried myself, but my copied code produced a page with no pictures. It was clear that variable(s) were set in the detail page that I am trying to by-pass, that are required for the copied javascript to work properly. So any advice on what code to use, where to put it etc to make this happen (without breaking anything else) would be great.
