Manual processing of orders placed online

I just wanted to know how legal this is...

Basically, I am an indepedent consultant / sales rep for a manufacturer of consumer goods, and all payment information I collect is passed on to the main accounting department of this company, which takes care of processing. I have had a website for about 5 years but all my orders in the past were made by phone. Now, I'm working on launching an osC store, to service clients around the U.S. and Canada. I had two questions before I begin online sales...

1) First of all, is it even legal to collect credit card information online (using osC's regular credit card payment module) and pass it on to my parent company as described above?

2) I also wanted to know what steps I could take to secure this data and protect myself from any potential liability. Any advice would be much appreciated...

Thank you.

Use an external gateway for cc handling like authorizenet. Otherwise to properly use the osc cc module you would have to do quite some work to comply with several security requirement specs like pci.

Do you need a merchant account somewhere online or do you just need a gateway and then the gateway processes and sends the money to your checking account? I'm confused as to how this works.

with external gateways you do need a merchant account. Usuallly, the gateway itself includes some documentation for the requirements a merchant should satisfy, in order to become a member.
