there are contributions about it and basically you can control the box width from the catalog\includes\application_top.php

define('BOX_WIDTH', 125); // how wide the boxes should be in pixels (default: 125)

if you need better control try some of the contributions:

I am trying to change my left column too and my application_top states:

// customization for the design layout

define('BOX_WIDTH', 120); // how wide the boxes should be in pixels (default: 125)

The problem I'm having is the left column already has been changed to 203 and the right column is 165 and everything I've read so far says there should be a BOX_WIDTH_LEFT and BOX_WIDTH_RIGHT but I can't find them. Could this be controlled in the stylesheet?

by default the height is automatically adjusted by the content in each box. Browsers won't follow the height defined when the content exceeds it for instance. So typically what is done is you display a number of entries for each box which is code driven. (like showing 1 product in the what's new box).
