My OSC *** SHOWCASE *** Site

Guest

Recommended Posts

Well, after about four months of hacking, altering, modding, contributing, and generally being an OSC nut, I have my site ready to "showcase" to the community:

http://www.discountcandleshop.com

Major additions (in no order):

* All Categories InfoBox

* UPS Order Tracking

* Heavy Layout Customization

* Who's Online Mod

* Dedicated Secure Server

* QuickPollBooth 1.2

* Customized Advanced Search

* Customized Product Options (on product view page)

* Customized Upsell / Cross sell modification

* Price Break Discount

* Gift Cert System

* XML Pricing Update from Vendor DB

* All Products List GOOGLE BOT friendly

And in the Admin Area:

* User Tracking Modification

* Advanced Search Term Report Modification

* Special Order Gateway for turning OSC orders into XML Supplier Orders

* Linkpoint Payment Gateway

And I'm sure I'm forgetting what else is there that I've done. I'd like to hear what others think of what we've done.

Looks really nice to me. I got a 404 Error though when I went to the contact page to ask a question.

If every member of this board donated $1 to the dev team, that would be over $11,000.00. Don't you think this cart is worth at least a $1????

Very nice Andrew. It's a bit slow to load using a 56K dial-up.

The "contact us" link on the bottom of the default.php is not working. I got a "page not found" error.

I just saw this site up online the other day. Great job! The reason why i saw it was that i'm also doing a candle site. Is this your own business, or are you designing the site for someone else? I saw it advertised on Google's Adwords Select. Is that working out good? By looking at the site, I don't think there will be any major competition since i'm just starting out and have a small inventory, with no candle accessories yet.

I see you offer clients to browse your complete site in SSL. (through your connection box)

This is a bad idea since every single request has to be SSL encoded which eats lots of resources.. I'd remove that option.

And the counting of products is also a bad idea (speed wise)

But it is definetly a nice shop :)

Far too many categories mate.

It is so overwelming when you first see it, that it kinda makes it too much hard work to look through it.

I really wouldn't keep such a huge list it will put visitors off.

IMHO

I agree, too much information on the default page. Would rather see the categories operate as normal rather then be open all the time (if you see what I mean)...also this makes the page *very* scrolly which is a Bad Thing? :?

Hey, thanks for all the comments!

RE: The categories count - I use categories display caching so the category count isn't really impacting my server performance. With over 3,500 products now it's very, very, very necessary to use caching.

RE: User Interface / Scrolling - you know, I don't like it either. However, I tested my conversion ratio (sales / clicks), and I convert nearly THREE TIMES BETTER with the long category list. I believe this is due to the fact that I impress upon the visitor that whatever they might be looking for re: candles, we likely have it. I'm going to keep it as it improves sales tremendously.

RE: The contact page - I can't replicate this error. Is anyone else getting a 404 on the contact_us.php page?

RE: All Prods Layout - yeah, the default allprods layout was pretty crappy for me, so I changed it around a bunch. Same goes for the poll/survey layout - almost no stylesheets used anywhere, so I just "brought them inline" with the rest of the default OSC.

I just noticed that the link to the contact_us.php is the following http://www.discount-candle.com/catalog/contact_us.php but all of the other references in the page point to discountcandleshop.com/something... . Maybe that could have something to do with it?

Nero,

My current cvs version of the pollbooth does in fact use style sheets for the box, and looks rather similar to yours.

Great minds think a like :D

Trust me, I'm an Accountant.

Ian - yeah, I noticed that in the GV/Credit Class that there is very little support for the stylesheets as well. I had to do some hacking to bring them "inline" with the look and feel of OSCommerce. I'm glad you update the poll booth for this. I love the functions on the poll software, BTW! Especially public/private and random polling. Quite cool!

For the all products changes here is my new source code:

http://www.discountcandleshop.com/allprods.txt

NOTE: This ONLY displays products with language_id = 1. You'll also want to change the HREF as I have a custom link that links to product_info.php without the use of a ? or & so that google can follow those links better.

Andrew

PS: I'll check into the google SID killer ASAP.
