Charene
Hi there, I'm busy with the final touches on my website, www.giftsinc.co.za, and would like any suggestions or feedback from the community. I'm still on a learning curve - so please, if you do have any suggestions, please advise how I should go about to achieve whatever you suggest... Thanks! Andrew Yuen
First off, your logo as well as contact information is very hard to read on your header. Also the view cart button is hard to read. I do not agree with those big buttons in your header. They detract from the overall look of your website. On the category rollover, the category text disappears. I would eliminate the background color during the rollover and just make the text underline. You have an error on line 275 “Error in parsing value for property ‘cursor’. Declaration dropped. There are way too many infoboxes on the left of your page creating white space on many pages. I rename promo 1, 2, 3 etc. to something more descriptive. Finally, I would get a SSL certificate installed. Andrew Yuen osCommerce, Community Team

abra123cadabra
Corporate Gifts ... that certainly needs coporate identity, or in the case of your site a colour/button scheme that goes nicely together. Don't be offended, but right now it looks like you had the first go at creating logo and buttons with photoshop. They are awful. Buttons usually have a flat surface and are rounded at the edges. You have little mountains there. I totally agree with the previous posts. Way to go... but if you persist you'll get there. abra The First Law of E-Commerce: If the user can't find the product, the user can't buy the product. Feedback and suggestions on my shop welcome. Note: My advice is based on my own experience or on something I read in these forums. No guarantee it'll work for you! Make sure that you always BACKUP the database and the files you are going to change so that you can rollback to a working version if things go wrong. Charene
Ok, I've killed the first lot of mountains... & I've removed the unneccesary boxes. I've got to stick with the logo, though, as it was professionaly designed when I started out my business a few years ago. It does not normally have the silver outline, but i kinda like my header background, and unfortunately this is the same as my logo's color. My corporate colors are blue & burgandy, and I am trying to stick to these colours in my website. My normal logo: Any suggestions on keeping the header, and including my logo in a different way? Also, will these buttons work better. Thanks to everybody's comments this far - really appreciated. Charene
tastar
Your site looks ok - definitely not stock osC. -I clicked on a few thumbnails to enlarge them - and the response for each was "Requested image was not found." - maybe there is something wrong with your image path or your product query in popup_image.php. -it seems like the Funk and Funky Stationery categories refer to the same items -the buttons in your header don't match the other buttons that you are using. The green and cyan buttons look nice, but they don't match the other colors that you are using. -you should have an About Us section, especially if you have been in business for a while -why are you choosing to do a login for price? The login for price text on the product info page seems to be a bit big, and login for price is repeated in your page title. I'm doing a login for price on my site, and it generally keeps people from checking it out as far as I can tell. I'm really too stubborn about things and don't want to get rid of it. So far I have added a list price that is visible so that maybe curiosity will cause someone to log in, then I set it up so that someone could just click the login button and enter as a guest and see pricing, and then added a Why? link to explain why I'm requiring a login, and, a couple of days ago, I made the login button an animated gif so that it sits there and annoys people (so that maybe they will click the button to make it go away and log in). The only people who buy from my site are a few corporate customers who are used to logging into web sites to purchase. I really am losing the casual shopper, people who are accustomed to easy to use sites like Amazon and the public in general (people really don't want to give away info - including me, so requiring personal information to really look at what you have to offer requires a real commitment). I don't get a ton of business through my site, but I'm relatively satisfied. And, I really don't attract one time bargain hunters or scammers which is also a good thing. So, for me, the login for price thing is ok, but, for you it may not be a good choice - I thought that it might be helpful to present what I see as the positive and negative aspects of doing it. In any case, good luck with your site. tony
eitai2001
Hi. I also have a South African website ... it isn't live yet, but there is a test version on the net. My suggestions to you are that you don't necessarily have to have your exact logo colour scheme on your website ... I also wanted to ... and my website was ok, but then I decided to change the colours to something lighter, and my site looks a lot better. As long as your site compliments your logo, you should be fine. You can check out my site at www.digitaladdiction.co.za and you can see what I mean ... look at my logo and look at my website colours ... yet as far as I can see they still go together. This site is not my final site ... in fact I am going to completely redesign it because I don't want something that looks stock OS right now. In the mean time I just needed something online, so please may no one write reviews about it ... its not the full version ... but enough about my site ... this is about yours ... Below the main header ... you have this huge blue strip with a search on the right and a weird Pink (I'm a guy, my colour set is limited to 16 :P ) box to the left ... get rid of the box in fact, in my opinion, you should get rid of the whole strip. Make the buttons in the header smaller and more ordered in their placement and I would say put the search box to the right of all those boxes. Make the graphical headers smaller ... also make the bevels much softer and darken the top (it isn't the easiest to read the white text with the white part of the bevel. Get rid of the shopping cart box at the bottom, you already have one in your header. Also get rid of the quick find box, you already have a search box at the top of your page and chances are no one will use advanced search. I know you said you liked your header background ... and there's nothing wrong with it ... just lighten it so that your logo and the text stick out ... oh and make the text slightly bigger with bold. And thats all for now. Don't take anything personally ... all my opinion. Regards Itai Etzman
Charene
Hi all! Thanks for your replies. No offence taken - we're all here to help one another. I definately found some interesting suggestions, and will carefully go through all of these as soon as I have a bit of time on hand. I am really battling to get the dynamic mopics to work, and have read through almost every post that has something about mopics listed. The images are uploaded in my images_big folder, but somewhere something is really not working. If anyone can help, it will be appreciated, as this is a huge problem for me. Regarding the rest of my site, please keep the suggestions coming. Thanks! Charene
luddite_jean
I also found the 'requested image not found' problem. Also, the 'Login for price' text. I can understand that you might have different prices for different customers, hence the login (if not, why not just display the price), but the text should be hyper-linked to the login/account creation page. This is probably a personal thing, but I don't like the grey box that follows your cursor around the products.
