SSL Certificates - Where Do I Start?

I've virtually sorted out my online shop and got it how I want it to look, but now I've got to sort out merchant accounts and all the other stuff like SSL certificates, etc.

I've had a look online at this company that provide SSL certificates but I'm totally confused!

http://www.thawte.com/ssl-digital-certific...l-certificates/

Which one do I buy?

And once I've bought one is it easy to integrate into the online shop?

Any help at all would be appreciated!

I've found Thawte (and Verisign) to be *very* expensive. The easiest way to order an SSL cert is to go into your web host's control panel and ask them to order it for you - if they allow you to do this. Barring that, you'll have to order it yourself. I use GeoTrust, which provides the same level of SSL protection as Thawte, at a much reduced cost. And everything can be done online in a few minutes, including all the necessary approvals. www.geotrust.com. The cert I use is the QuickSSL Premium.

Hope this helps,

Matt

For the majority of shops, there is simply no reason to pay more than $20 for a certificate, if you do it yourself. If you pay your host to do it, then $50 or so is a reasonable cost (and is usually worth it since ordering nad installing a cert can be a pain).

Thanks for you advice guys.

I've been looking at my control panel with the web hosting company I've used to host the OSCommerce Online Shop and found a button called 'Dedicated SSL' and when I clicked on it the following came up:

Do you guys think this would be good enough and should I just go and order it?

If I am doing the conversion correctly, that is about $100/year US. That is pretty expensive. To use a private certificate you also have to have a private IP, which I am assuming is included in that price. That might bring the actual price down to $88. That would be almost acceptable for the first year of hosting but for the second, it starts to get quite exepnsive so I wouldn't use it, if possible. But your host may not allow any other choice so you will need to check with them first.
