Dear Oscommerce User,

I have noticed that a big challange is what to do once you set up your OSC site.

You are probably wondering like alot of people in this forum whether to get a

merchant or gateway account. This is what I know as of today. I invite you to

post more relevant information, since at the time of this post this is all that I know

1: You can either get a merchant account or a gateway account

So lets start with a Merchant Account:

a. Monthly Fees to use their service.

       b. A setup fee to start using their service.

       c. A percentage rate charged per sale, it can range form 1.8 to 2.9

       d. A fee of aprx. 30 cents is charged per/transaction added to% rate.

       e. Does it require you to leave the site.

       f. Transactions per month allowed depends on the company.

       g. What type of transactions do they accept.

Now a gateway: (PAYPAL is the example)

a.   customers have to leave your site.

    b. customers have to sign up to a service before they can pay you

  c. You get charged a fee when you deposit the funds into your account

First of all, I strictly use a gateways to process all credit cards. I think that unless you are going to do high volume right off the bat, that this is perfect for a business just starting out. also, you don't need an SSL, and a merchant account. The processing fees are about the same, I've found.

That being said, so far, I have only found 2 gateways worthwhile. Paypal, and 2checkout. if anyone knows of others, do tell.

It is true that customers have to leave your site to process cards with either of these. however, there are great differences between the two.

Palpal you have to create an account, but it is relitively painless, and definatlely cheap. And lots of people already have paypal acconts.

With 2checkout, you don't have to create an account. Also, you can modify the checkout page to look like your site, so unless the customer looks at the url, they don't know you have left. 2checkout, however, has its drawbacks as well. First of all, it is almost twice as expensive. 5.5% plus .45 a transaction vs. paypals 2.9% plus .35. Also, the customer is billed as '2checkout' as opposed to paypals "paypal: wizards and wars".

I like to offer my customers both. Meanwhile I am researching the merchant account.
