Forward Slashes in product descriptions when using quotes or apostrophies

I have had oscommerce installed for a while, but haven't used it till now. I'm finding that when I save a product with a description that has words with apostrophes in it, then go back to edit, the system throws in a forward slash before every apostrohe. It adds another every time I go back to edit. How can I stop it from doing this please?
