Preview catalog before going live

I was wondering what solutions people had for previewing their catalog before going live with new products?

 

I figure I could set up a seperate directory and database with the same stuff but I don't want to do that. I was wondering if there was a better solution?

 

Any help will be appreciated.

It allows for you to browse the catalog and make test purchases but everyone else sees a down for maintenance page

 

When you're happy with the store you can turn it off to go live
