Product Name Limitations

I have searched the forums for the answers but I can't find the answers to my 2 questions.

 

1.) When typing in the products very long name, the program allows you to completely type everything in and then saves it as a shortened name making it difficult to know which product it is. So far we have experienced a cut off at around 60 characters. However sometimes it shortens it even shorter.

 

2.) We know that we are using oscommerce 2.2 ms 2 but we don't know what build. I would like to upgrade to the newer build, but only if I knew if there was any good reasons.

1. you can change the field length in the database. Just need to search for the correct field.

 

2. if its not broke, don't fix it. However I did raise a similar question a long time a go, and the suggestion to know what to change was to use a file compare prog like winmerge to see what the differences are between the latest release and your build. I didn't worry about it in the end, as it entails a lot of work which could be fruitless if you've heavily modified you site.
