Downloadable media - order status not changing after payment to PayPal

Greetings,

 

I have installed the PayPal ipn module [v 2.2] and it works with the exception of the order status. When payment is made, PayPal provides the "complete order confirmation" link that returns to my order confirmation page on my site and displays the following:

 

 

The module is set to make the status "download available" at this point but it doesn't do that, obviously.

 

If I change the status through Admin to "download available" then the date is correct and the link is live for the duration the module is set to allow and the number of downloads is also correctly displayed as set in the module.

 

Been searching the forums and the official thread for this mod but can't find the answer [most likely my shortcomings], but just can't figure out what's not right - can somebody help me out here?
