how to display items in columns and rows per product in product listing

Here is what i want. I want to mimic how new_products.php displays products. I would like to have 9 or 12 products listed in 3 columns and 3-4 rows any time you click on a catagory. My source is very lightly moded. If anyone could tell me i would apprecaite it.
