How easy is it to move site from one host to another?

Hi,

I'm just experimenting with osCommerce, I've set it up on a free webhost, when I decide to go live I'll probably move to another host, and get a proper domain, how easy is this to do? Is it just a matter of downloading the files (ftp) and moving them to the new host, or do I have to start with a fresh install and then move files?

Thanks

Download all folders/files, and a backup of the database. Create a database on your new website and run the backup into it using phpMyAdmin. Upload all folders/files to the new host and edit the two configure.php files manually.

I have tried to move my site per these instructions but still cannot get to the catalog portion of the site. The admin worked fine but the catalog side gives me a parse error line 1 on index.php. The site worked fine before the move. Any help appreciated.

Vger,

Did you ever get your site back up and running? I was wondering how easy it is to move hosts. ALso, how is your new host and do you like them? I'm looking for a good web host for my oscommerce site/

Rhea's instruction should work although I would add two things to it. First, your host should handle the move for you. If they don't, you may want to rethink the host. If you do do it yourself, and assuming your site is live, you should put up a blocking page on your old site and rename the includes directory. Otherwise, someone can place an order or create a customer account and they would be lost once the move was over.
