What happens if I manually add Customers to the database?

Does anyone know what the impact is of doing this? ie. creating customer accounts 'blind' by say direct entry to the database?

 

Also, for obvious reasons, I do not wish to generate welcome emails or passwords either.

 

For example, would it stop the customer creating an account themselves later on (say due to OS finding a non-unique email address). Or is there a mod to work around this?

 

I have some hundreds of customers who replied to an off-site campaign I ran and many would like newsletters etc. Later, I hope some will become customers but for now I just need to manage this data somehow.

If you add them in manually, later when they go to login with their email they can just use the Forgotten Password feature to obtain their password.
