Default Currency Wont Change

In the admin panel I've changed the default currency to pounds but on the site the default is still dollars and if you manually change the currency it reverts back to dollars on the next page.

go to admin >> configuration and see if Switch To Default Language Currency is set to TRUE. If yes set it to false, otherwise the problem is somewhere else...
