Move osCommerce site to subdirectory?

Hi All:

I would like to know if it is possible or advisable to move the home page of a domain out from from within an existing and fully functioning osCommerce based site.

Perhaps moving the osCommerce site to a subdirectory withing the domain so that the site owner's employee could make changes to the home page without mucking around in the php. Primary objective is SEO but other objectives include being able to make changes to "conditions of use" boiler plate language, addition of site "FAQ" page, and some other administration issues. Again, this is for a well working, well established secure site on a self-managed dedicated server with hundreds of products.

I have spent a couple of hours lurking around the forums and the knowledge base and have gotten the feeling that perhaps osCommerce is not well suited to be used in this manner?

On the surface, the objective seems relatively straight forward, easy to communicate and understand. Unfortunately, the original site administrator/tech support person is no longer with the company so we feel a little overwhelmed with trying to accomplish this objective with no php background or expertise.

If there is a documented method of moving the osCommerce store to a subdirectory, a link to the specific documentation would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If the site is live I would not move it. You can create a copy of it in a sub directory and disallow SE's from indexing it in a robot.txt file, use that version for testing purposes. The other option would be to install something such as EasyPHP on the desktop and test there before uploading. If they are not good at PHP or you think they might mess it up the desktop way might be better as there is less chance of writing over things.

Backup and then FTP to the sub-directory all the files and make changes in the configure.php files and you should have a second working copy.

Thanks VERY much for the reply. The backup and copy option seems like a great idea. The site is live and unfortunately we have no idea how to begin doing a backup and copy to new directory...scary isn't it? Is there an easy, or at least foolproof way to do this backup and copy? Also, whagt changes would be required in the configure.php files.

On the positive side, we are very comfortable managing the store itself in terms of products/pricing/delivery options/billing/payment processing/keeping buyers informed on order status through delivery, etc. So I would have to give osCommerce thumbs up on that front.

Thanks,

Mark
